The creation of the Knights of St. John International owes itself to the inspiration of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. In 1886, some American Roman Catholics in New York met and decided that a living tribute should be created to commemorate the gallant Knights who had so courageously defended the Church in the medieval era. They founded an Order in the tradition of Hospitallers by forming the “Roman Catholic Union of St. John.”

In May, 1886, the Ancient and Noble Order of the Knights of St. John was established in the United States.

In 1992, the name was changed to Knights of St. John International for the overseas Commanderies, by the Laws of the State of New York.

In 2005, the Los Angeles Commandery was formed through the efforts of the West Coast Organizer, Captain Francis Akpamgbo and Sir Celestine Ebegbulem as the only Commandery west of the Mississippi. Members were initiated on October 1, 2005.

Both the Knights and Ladies are more than 100.
